چکیده

A new method for efficient, broadband sum and difference frequency generation of ultrafast pulses is demonstrated. The principles of the method follow from an analogy between frequency conversion and coherent optical excitation of a two-level system. For conversion of ultrafast pulses, the concepts of adiabatic conversion are developed further in order to account for dispersion and group velocity mismatch. The scheme was implemented using aperiodically poled nonlinear crystals and a single step nonlinear mixing process, leading to conversion of nearIR (∼790 nm) ultrafast pulses into the blue (∼450 nm) and mid-IR (∼3.15 μm) spectral regions. Conversion bandwidths up to 15 THz FWHM and efficiencies up to 50% are

Efficient, broadband, and robust frequency conversion by fully nonlinear adiabatic three-wave mixing

A comprehensive physical model of adiabatic three-wave mixing is developed for the fully nonlinear regime, i.e., without making the undepleted pump approximation. The conditions for adiabatic evolution are rigorously derived, together with an estimate of the bandwidth of the process. Furthermore, these processes are shown to be robust and efficient. Finally, numerical simulations demonstrate ad...

Frequency conversion of femtosecond laser pulses in an engineered aperiodic poled optical superlattice.

We theoretically propose a procedure based on a cascading genetic algorithm for the design of aperiodically quasi-phase-matched gratings for frequency conversion of optical ultrafast pulses during difference-frequency generation. By designing the sequence of a domain inversion grating, different wavelengths at the output idler pulse almost have the same phase response, so femtosecond laser puls...

Fully efficient adiabatic frequency conversion of broadband Ti:sapphire oscillator pulses.

By adiabatic difference-frequency generation in an aperiodically poled nonlinear crystal-a nonlinear optical analog of rapid adiabatic passage in a two-level atomic system-we demonstrate the conversion of a 110 nm band from an octave-spanning Ti:sapphire oscillator to the infrared, spanning 1550 to 2450 nm, with near-100% internal conversion efficiency. The experiment proves the principle of co...

The return of the frequency sweep: designing adiabatic pulses for contemporary NMR.

Frequency-modulated (FM) pulses that function according to adiabatic principles are becoming increasingly popular in many areas of NMR. Often adiabatic pulses can extend experimental capabilities and minimize annoying experimental imperfections. Here, adiabatic principles and some of the current methods used to create these pulses are considered. The classical adiabatic rapid passage, which is ...

Transferring vibrational population between electronic states of diatomic molecules via light-induced-potential shaping

We investigate two-photon, selective excitation of diatomic molecules with intense, ultrafast laser pulses. The method involves transfer of a vibrational population between two electronic states by shaping of light-induced potentials ~LIPs!. Creation and control of the LIPs is accomplished by choosing pairs of transform-limited pulses with proper frequency detunings and time delays. Depending o...
